Running SteamOS on the ROG Ally

Last updated:

ETA Prime is back with another video, this time running SteamOS on the ROG Ally.

He clarifies that it’s not exactly SteamOS 3. Instead, he showcases Chimera OS, a gaming-centric Linux distro based on Arch, which has been working well on handhelds and desktop PCs.

While some features work great, there are a few issues due to the newer hardware, such as non-functional audio, intermittent Wi-Fi, and limited TDP control. They believe these issues will be addressed in future updates.

He highlights that the performance is decent, although they couldn’t adjust TDP settings effectively while testing various games, including Forza Horizon 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom Eternal, Shredder’s Revenge, Sonic Mania, Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim, F1 2020, Cuphead, Cars 2, and Cyberpunk 2077.

We would not recommend running SteamOS on the ROG Ally until these issues have been fixed.
